Josh Henkin, fitness expert and inventor of the ORIGINAL Fitness Sandbag System, was a Division 1 athlete with a problem. Josh suffered a severe back injury during his playing days that not only ended his athletic career, but also greatly compromised his every day life. His quality of life had become so poor he was about ready to throw in the towel. Physical therapy didn’t work. Traditional corrective exercises didn’t either.

Josh set out on a quest to find a way to heal himself. Encouraged by colleagues to seek out the methods of old-time strongmen (who were as mobile and athletic as they were strong), he was interested by the idea of “odd object training.” He understood exercise physiology so the idea of an unstable load was intriguing.

He began a workout regimen with his homemade sandbag. Before long, the pain he had endured in his lower back was beginning to subside!

What he discovered during the those early workouts was the unique power of sandbag training. He found that its effectiveness was based on 3 things:

Josh had discovered an exercise method with great potential, but with equally as many problems. Over time, Josh’s progress would stall and issues arouse with the actual sandbag itself. He began to understand that unlike many other forms of exercise, there was no specific method of implementing sandbags into exercise programs. This was a problem! Without knowing where to begin or how to problem solve fitness problems, Josh realized that most people would stall in their training as he had experienced.

The homemade sandbag also suffered from some serious problems. Not only did the homemade sandbag leak dust all over his training area; grabbing onto the homemade sandbag eventually ripped the skin on people’s hands. Lastly, and possibly most importantly, was the inability to create more versatility and progressive made exercises.

Rather than give up on the sandbag training concept, Josh decided to design a better sandbag implement, one that was designed specifically for the needs of fitness programs. After rigorous research and development, and a lot of tenacity, the first Ultimate Sandbag Training System™ was born.

Toward the end of 2010 military grade rubber handles were added to the Ultimate Sandbag. This was done after listening to all the great trainers and fitness enthusiasts that were using the Ultimate Sandbag. When people performed repetition cleans and other movements there was a concern that the handles would eventually dig into the hands too greatly. While we thought about simply adding padding to the handles we found that the handles would still collapse into a central point in the hand. Our best option was to add rubber handles and know our users could comfortably grab onto the handles and actually have a better grip.

Rubber handles made getting proficient in Ultimate Sandbag exercises easier and again expanded the versatility of the Ultimate Sandbag. Coaches found our new rubber handles very exciting and were adding thick grip handles and getting creative in numerous ways and we knew this was the right decision!
