Getting Strong Without Barbells?
The last year and a half have been more eye opening to me than any other time in my 15+ year career in the fitness industry. I would say I have new thoughts about 70% of what I use to believe were standards that would never change. One of those that have caught a lot of attention from others was the value of the barbell in strength training. Oh man, you would have thought I insulted people’s religions with the response I got, but in the end most were emotional arguments, not rationale.
Last weekend everything came together though when I was at a conference that displayed the best talent in our industry and the leader in spinal health and performance, Dr. Stuart McGill, said, “spend less time under the barbell.” This wasn’t actually in regards to spinal health, but core performance! The more and more I talked to some of these incredible minds I saw a trend, a desire to do so, but not the confidence to how to go about it.
That is why I asked someone I respect so highly, Strength Coach Troy Anderson, to spend a little time to talk about why and how you could get really strong and incredibly fit without barbells. Troy isn’t just a great mind, but athlete as well! I personally witnessed him demolish competition at a Strongman Contest being one of the lighter competitors in the tire flip, this guy must know something! Still as age 40 is creeping up on him (I know he won’t like me saying that!) he competes in sports with guys half his age at a high level. The most interesting part, Troy told me he hasn’t touched a barbell in almost two years!
